Water is essential to life and is arguably our most precious resource. Without appropriate water management, whether in agriculture, industry, community development, or maintenance of a sustainable environment, we run the risk of over exploitation and contamination of this most essential commodity.
Successful water management is dependent on the development of integrated solutions. This requires social, political, institutional, legal and financial, as well as scientific, technical and environmental awareness and understanding. The Water Management programme has been developed in collaboration with employers in response to the increased demand for water managers with the appropriate blend of skills and creativity to provide solutions to the complex problems of the future.
This course provides the skills and knowledge required to assess, plan, execute and implement strategies for the sustainable management of water in natural, semi-natural and man-made environments. It addresses the common themes pertaining to water management in all situations, whilst allowing specialisation through the choice of one of the five specialist options.
This course is suitable for graduates with science, engineering, geography or related degrees keen to pursue careers in water management; or graduates currently in employment keen to extend their qualifications or to pursue a career change; or individuals with other qualifications who possess considerable relevant experience.
On completion of this programme there is an opportunity to gain experience of an international development project through the development charity SAFAD. This charity is the students' own non-government organisation (NGO), and has supported development programmes since 1969. Recent projects (typically in association with a local NGO) include:
Banteng Water Supply Project, Cameroon
Rainwater Harvesting Project, Kenya
Water supply systems in the Bolivian Altiplano Lxil Triangle
Community Water Supply Programme, Guatemala
The School of Applied Sciences also offers the Water & Wastewater Engineering, Water & Wastewater Technology, MTech Water Processes- Advanced Professional Masters programmes.
